Escape to Elk Island

2017

Friends were camped out at Elk Island National Park, and I invited us to go see them. (ha! We’re friends like that) We took the crazy short drive out to Astotin campground and met them at the beach area.

Holy man it’s changed a lot since we were there last, 8 years ago when we took Gareth’s family out there for a day trip.

We did a short walk around the lake while the kids ran, and soon overheated. A quick stop at the park, and we headed for the water for a swim.

A play on the dock, a caribou spotting (REALLY close!), tons of splashing, and it was dinner time. The evening flew by and the kids were exhausted. It was such a slow paced, calm evening.

It felt like the perfect summer day.

Today was positively British. I had no idea what to expect when Gareth said we were visiting this open air theatre on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. The first show happened here in 1932 and it’s still being used today. Imagine!! Seeing a performance with that stunning ocean view as the backdrop. It was incredible. Kay said to me – imagine this place being in Britain! Well…I can’t imagine it being anywhere else (except Greece…I could definitely see it in Greece).

I would love to see a show here once, but I have to say…Max and I tried the seats out. They aren’t the most comfortable.

The view from the Minak Theatre showed us Porthcurno right below, so we had to go have our lunch there, and play for a while.

The wind picked up and we all got chilly. Callum was soaking wet from walking through that freezing cold water. Max was soaked from falling over. So we stripped them and changed them and headed to our last stop of the day – Sennen Cove.

Callum had a gazillion questions about the Lifeboat Station – how does the boat come out? How do the people know what to wear on the boat? How do they know someone needs to be rescued? It’s no wonder his brain is on overdrive these days.

London

2014

Our last days in the UK were spent in London, one of my very favourite cities. Being in a busy, bustling place is a whole different ballgame with a little man. Our usual routine in London is to hit the pavement as early as we can, and see as much as we can in a day. This trip had  much slower, relaxed pace.

We played in Holland Park, we cozied up in a few pubs, we visited with one of our very best friends, and we soaked up the last moments of our adventure.

Callum was enthralled with the grass, the birds, the buses, with the bustle that is brand new to him. With the things that spring will bring back to Edmonton that he doesn’t remember. So much of this trip was just for us, he napped and missed much of the excitement.

And just like that, it was time to come home.

Callum doesn’t need much to amuse him, especially at grandma and granddad’s house. Free reign outside, lots of rocks, warm sunshine and dad keeping him safe.

Lunch at Jamie’s

2014

A day just the three of us in Cardiff. We took it easy and browsed in some of the lovely shops. The clothes here are just wonderful!

We treated ourselves to a leisurely lunch at Jamie’s Italian, a Jamie Oliver restaurant located in the heart of Cardiff. Jamie’s Ted Talk is one of my favourites, I have huge respect for him and what he’s trying to accomplish in his fight to educate people about healthy cooking. This made the opportunity to eat in one of his restaurants even more exciting.

The place was buzzing, the atmosphere busy and bustling and welcoming. They have managed to keep the place down to earth yet precise and efficient.

The meal was lovely, the company even better. It was a fab day xox

The Candy Jar

2014

Callum’s days here have been full of attention, affection and chocolate. The Brits love love LOVE their chocolate, and in the Roughley family Cadbury is best. The family is getting their spoiling in while they can and Danger Man is pretty happy about it.

Auntie and Uncle’s house is for exploring, especially the candy jars. Don’t worry, I think Callum found every one.

If you’ve been following along, we’d love a comment! Let us know you’re here :)

The three of us had a rare day alone, with no rain. We spent it visiting two castles, an old country church yard filled with snow drops, and a classic red telephone box.

We brought a ball and Callum laughed and squealed with delight as we ran with him and kicked the ball against the castle wall. And then he kicked it on his own, which thrilled his dad to no end.

So Very British

2014

Early mornings here mean steam coming up with strong brew in cup.

That goes for late morning, afternoon and before dinner too.

I do adore this custom.

A Day at the Beach

2014

The British, and especially the Roughleys, run outside to play the moment the rain subsides and the sun comes out in the wintertime. We headed to Tenby to soak in the good weather, especially as one thing Kay really wanted to do was take Callum to the beach.

The day was gorgeous, the sun warm, the sand created an endless playground. All Callum needed was a stick, a stone, and Grandma to show him how to draw and play in the sand.

The day was my favourite of the trip so far.
